How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
A quick, practical way to estimate your ring size using items you already have. For the most accurate measurement, visiting a professional jeweller is still the best option.
The String or Paper Strip Method
This method gives a close estimate and works well if you don’t have a ring sizer. You only need a thin strip of paper or string, a pen, and a ruler.
- Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of string about 10cm long.
- Wrap it around the finger you want the ring for. Make sure it sits where the ring will naturally sit.
- Mark the point where the paper or string overlaps.
- Lay it flat and measure the length (in millimetres) from the end to your mark.
- Use the measurement to compare with a UK ring size chart.
This measurement is the circumference of your finger. If you are between sizes, choose the slightly larger size. Fingers also swell slightly throughout the day, so measuring in the evening usually gives the most realistic result.
Tips for an Accurate Home Measurement
- Measure your finger at room temperature. Cold fingers shrink, warm fingers expand.
- Measure 2–3 times to make sure you get a consistent result.
- If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably.
- Different fingers have different sizes; always measure the exact finger the ring is for.
For the Best Accuracy: Visit a Jeweller
Home measuring works well for estimates, but it cannot match a professional sizing. A local jeweller can size your finger properly using metal gauge rings, ensuring a perfect fit—especially important for thicker bands, eternity rings, or engagement rings.
If you’re unsure or want complete accuracy, visiting a jeweller is the most reliable option and only takes a few minutes.
