Victorian 18ct Yellow Gold Buckle Ring, circa 1897–1898

A substantial late Victorian 18ct yellow gold buckle ring, dating to approximately 1897–1898 and weighing an impressive 7.4g.

The broad band is modelled as a traditional belt and buckle, with the buckle tongue and raised strap detail worked in relief across the front. The surrounding gold is richly decorated with hand-cut floral and foliate engraving, set against a finely textured background that gives the ornamentation excellent depth.

Buckle jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, where the motif was associated with strength, loyalty and enduring attachment - the idea of two things securely fastened together. That symbolism makes surviving buckle rings especially appealing as both jewellery and social history.

At approximately 12mm at its widest point, tapering to around 4.6mm at the back, this is a substantial ring without feeling excessively heavy on the hand. The rich yellow tone and considerable gold weight give it the presence expected of a genuine late Victorian piece.
